The short version
- The number is a ratio, not a size. A smaller second number means a bigger model, which is the opposite of what most people assume the first time they read it.
- Because it is a ratio, two cars in the same scale are not the same length — a 1:64 pickup is genuinely bigger than a 1:64 hatchback, exactly as the real vehicles are.
- Choose the scale from the shelf you have and the subject you want, not from the price. Detail rises with size, and so does the space and the dusting.
Scale notation is one of those things that looks like jargon and turns out to be a single sentence. A model marked 1:64 is one sixty-fourth the size of the real thing in every direction. That is all it says. Everything else — how big it will actually be, how much detail to expect, what it will cost you in shelf space — follows from that sentence and from the size of the vehicle being modeled.
The notation is written three ways and they all mean the same thing: 1:64, 1/64, and occasionally just 64th. There is no difference.
The trap: smaller number, bigger model
This catches almost everybody once. The second number is a divisor, so as it goes up, the model goes down. A 1:18 car is much larger than a 1:64 car, not smaller. Written out, 1:18 means “one eighteenth of full size”, and one eighteenth of a car is a substantial object.
The order from largest to smallest, for the scales you will actually meet, runs 1:18, 1:24, 1:32, 1:43, 1:64. Memorize that sequence and the notation stops being confusing permanently.
Roughly how big each one is
The figures below are approximate, and they are approximate for a real reason covered in the next section. Treat them as the length of a typical mid-sized car, not as a specification.

Aircraft use a different set of conventions, because an airliner at car scale would not fit in a house. Helicopters and small aircraft are commonly done at 1:48 or 1:72, which is why a 1:48 helicopter and a 1:24 car can end up looking similar in size on a shelf despite the numbers being a long way apart.
Why two cars in the same scale are different lengths
Because scale is a ratio, it preserves the differences between the real vehicles. One sixty-fourth of a full-size pickup is a larger object than one sixty-fourth of a compact hatchback, exactly as it should be. A shelf of correctly scaled 1:64 cars is therefore not a shelf of identically sized cars, and if it is, something has been fudged.

Which brings us to the useful caveat about mainline Hot Wheels and its direct competitors. Those cars are described as 1:64, and many are close to it, but the line has always been sized to fit the packaging first. Castings get stretched or compressed so that a semi truck and a city car both sit properly on the same blister card. That is a design decision, not an error, and it is why a mainline truck and a mainline coupe come out suspiciously similar in length.
Brands that market themselves on realism generally hold the ratio more strictly, and you can see it: their pickups look too big next to a mainline car, which is the point. If you want to know which brands sit where on that spectrum, the brand field guide covers it maker by maker.
What detail you can reasonably expect at each size
Detail is limited by physics before it is limited by budget. There is only so much a tampo pad can print on a surface three inches long, and there is no room for an opening hood on a body that thin.
- 1:64 gives you a body, a base, printed graphics and wheels. The good ones add rubber tires, a metal base, printed lights and grilles, and occasionally clear glazing with an interior you can see. Opening parts are rare and usually a compromise.
- 1:43 is the point where separately fitted mirrors, wipers and badges start appearing, and where the proportions stop being approximations.
- 1:24 supports opening doors and hood, a modeled engine bay, and a real interior. This is the standard size for a display NASCAR car for exactly this reason.
- 1:18 is where you get carpeted floors, working steering, fabric or textured seats, wiring in the engine bay on the better pieces, and photo-etched badges. It is also where a single model takes as much shelf as ten 1:64 cars.
The trade is straightforward and worth naming: variety versus depth. Fifty 1:64 cars will show you fifty vehicles. Five 1:18 cars will show you five vehicles properly. Neither is the right answer.
Practical things nobody tells you before you commit
Three considerations that only become obvious after the shelf is full.

- Dust scales too. A 1:18 model has roughly twelve times the surface area of a 1:64 model of the same car, all of it visible, much of it with fine parts you cannot safely wipe. Large open displays of large models are a maintenance commitment. A soft brush beats any cloth.
- Big models are heavy and fragile at once. A 1:18 body is substantial metal, but the mirrors, wipers, aerials and door handles hanging off it are thin plastic. They are the first casualties in a box, and they are what to check first in a listing photo.
- Packaging size follows model size. A large boxed model is a large, heavy parcel, and carrier costs follow weight and dimensions. That is not a reason to avoid the scale, but it is a reason to buy several at once rather than one at a time.
Choosing a scale for what you actually collect
Let the subject decide, because the hobby has already decided for you in most categories.
If you collect broadly — marques, eras, whatever catches your eye — 1:64 is the only scale where that is affordable and storable, and it is where the variety lives. If you collect one car, or one driver, or one era, go bigger, because at 1:24 and 1:18 you are buying an object rather than a token. Racing subjects skew heavily to 1:24 on the display side and 1:64 on the collecting side, with relatively little in between, which is why the racing shelf tends to look barbell-shaped. Motorcycles are mostly 1:32 and 1:12, because a bike at car scale is tiny.
One habit that saves money regardless: decide before you buy, not after. Mixed scales on one shelf look wrong in a way that is difficult to explain and impossible to unsee, because the eye reads them as a size error rather than as variety.
Checking scale on something you already own
The scale is nearly always cast or printed on the base of the model, alongside the maker, the country of manufacture and a copyright year. If it is not on the base, check the box — boxed models almost always carry it on an end flap where it can be read on a shelf.
If neither says, measure the model, look up the real vehicle's length, and divide. It is a thirty-second job and it settles the question exactly. Be a little careful with lot listings, where mixed scales are common and a top-down photograph flattens the difference between a 1:24 and a 1:64 completely.
